8th Annual BRICS Astronomy Working Group (BAWG) Workshop
The 8th edition of the Annual BRICS Astronomy Working Group (BAWG) Workshop took place virtually from 18 – 20 October 2022. Under the theme “The BITDN Flagship programme: Transients, Surveys, and Time Domain Astronomy,” the event was hosted by the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) and received support from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
Spanning three days, the BAWG workshop comprised two days of science talks and a final day dedicated to the BRICS Astronomy Working Group meeting. During the meeting, focal points and government representatives from each partner country came together to reach resolutions for the upcoming year.
A total of 174 participants registered for the event, with an average attendance of around 110 people throughout the workshop. The program featured 21 speakers who provided diverse and balanced perspectives, representing each of the partner countries. Their science talks covered a wide range of topics.
During the BAWG meeting, delegates engaged in discussions regarding operational and strategic matters concerning the consortium. Notably, the adoption of the Virtual BRICS Astronomy Association model was one of the significant resolutions. Additionally, all participating countries emphasized the importance of reviving and encouraging bilateral cooperation among BRICS countries. This collaboration aims to promote mutual access to resources and expertise, facilitating research endeavors and the development of human capital.
The successful workshop showcased the commitment and collaboration within the BRICS Astronomy community. By exploring emerging areas of astronomy and fostering bilateral cooperation, the consortium strives to advance scientific knowledge and facilitate the growth of research and development capabilities within each member country.

The mission of the BRICS Astronomy Working Group is to promote cooperation between BRICS member countries in the field of astronomy and enabling technologies through joint activities of government, universities, research institutions, and industry, as relevant, to develop astronomical sciences, generate new knowledge, train human capital, develop new technologies and applications, and improve public understanding of science.
